F.A.Q

- Frequently asked questions about domains, web sites and hosting.

1. What is a domain and why do I need one?

A web domain represents a part of the World Wide Web you have control over. The domain name is your web identity as long as you maintain it's registration with a domain registrar.

2. What is the difference between a domain and a website?

A website is a container for what you build in your domain. A domain can have one or many websites. Right now, you are looking at a website that is a part of the domain called "thewoodlandcompany.net."

3. If I have a domain and a website, why do I need hosting?

cA domain needs an address so you and others can find it. This address is called the Uniform Resource Locator, or more commonly, "URL". The domain also needs space on a computer that is always connected to the World Wide Web. It must be a stable and safe connection.

A hosting service provides the address (URL), space for your domain on it's servers, and maintenance of the data and connection to the Web. The hosting service may provide many other services as well.

4. How do I know what I need on my website?

Through a special interview process, we discuss the possibilities for your website. Then we explore your goals and expectations for the site. We work together to build a common mission, then colaborate a model for your site.

5. How much will I be allowed to participate in the design process?

Client participation in the design process is essential. It starts with the initial interview and continues throughout the project. In fact, we can arrange on-line observation of site construction if desired!

6. I want to provide photographs and videos on the website. Is this possible?

No problem. We support Acrobat, Filemaker Pro, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, Java-script, Photoshop, Quicktime, and other graphic and video formats. You can also choose add-on gallery and media sharing applications such as those listed to the left of this column.

7. What if I want to change or add something after the site is published on the World Wide Web?

The Woodland Company Website design packages and Design and Hosting packages include at least 4 30-minute web updates during the first year after the site is published. Major changes requiring more than this can be negotiated.

8. What kind of email can I get? Can I use my domain name?

All domains registered through The Woodland Company receive a 25 megabyte domain email account. All domains hosted through us receive anywhere from 10 to 1000 @domain email accounts, depending on theneed and the plan agreed upon.

9. After the website is published, who will own the rights?

Unless otherwise agreed upon, all design, graphics and content published on the World Wide Web are the property of the client. The source files and code used to create the project remain the property of The Woodland Company unless an agreement is made to provide these files to the client.

If the client wishes The Woodland Company to assume domain management, the domain may be registered to The Woodland Company, but will be relinquished to the client upon request.

10. How long does all this take?

A basic web page can be up and running in as little as one week. More complicated sites may take several months to create. An estimate can be provided after the initial interview.
